MIT Lincoln Laboratory is a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) that performs approximately $1 billion of applied research per year for the DoD and other organizations within the federal government. Five years ago the Laboratory launched a large digital enterprise transformation effort that will impact every aspect of operation including business systems, engineering tools, and communication platforms. The promise of digital transformation is a highly efficient and effective, connected environment that can easily adapt to changing technologies. The path to realizing that environment is challenged by interoperability issues, conflicting platform evolution, and cultural acceptance. We will examine some of these challenges that Lincoln’s Engineering Division faced in developing and adopting new tools and methodologies along with our evolving approach to building our digital environment.
