CADdoctor removes interior parts in an assembly, either by deleting those interior parts or integrating the entire assembly model into a single solid, to create a simple outline of the 3D model. This simple model is useful for referencing or planning layouts when designing surrounding parts or equipment, and is very effective in protecting IP (intellectual property).

CADdoctor efficiently creates mid-surfaces for CAE analysis from detailed solid models. Elysium achieves a high success rate in automatic mid-surface generation, even on difficult areas where the geometry is complex with bosses and ribs. In the event a mid-surface is not generated automatically, users can check these areas and correct them with rich editing tools.

This combination of automatic and interactive methods ensures that the mid-surface generation matches the users' intent. This allows for a smooth circulation of designing and analysis, while shortening the development time.

Verifying Geometry

1. Detecting Engineering Changes on the Geometry

CADdoctor verifies CAD data after engineering changes against the original model, and clearly displays the differences in a color map.

Differences will be listed and users can zoom into each difference area to eliminate oversights.

Furthermore, with Elysium's feature recognition technology, the differences will be displayed with associated numerical values such as fillet radii, chamfer length and hole diameters.

2. Detecting Engineering Changes on an Assembly Structure

CADdoctor verifies CAD data after engineering changes against the original model, and detects the following:

  • Additions / deletions of parts
  • Changes in the location of part or assembly
  • Changes in the structure of the assembly tree
  • Changes in the part name

Users can check the differences in a list, highlight and zoom into each difference.

Reverse Engineering

While many tools require fully manual modeling from scanned data, CADdoctor automatically generates B-rep from point cloud or polygon data obtained from 3D scanning. This "automatic generation" is one of the biggest advantages of this tool. CADdoctor automatically recognizes fillet faces and other faces (i.e., cylindrical, planar, NURBS), and then color-codes them by face type. This achieves high fidelity in the reproduction of geometry, which is difficult to model manually.

This is a great tool to obtain B-rep data of the actual shape of prototypes or mass-produced products.

CADdoctor detects errors that do not comply with manufacturing conditions and will cause issues in creating dies or molding. It will highlight and create a list of the following areas:

  • Areas where the die construction becomes too complex due to undercut or similar issues
  • Areas where it is difficult to create dies due to inappropriate wall thickness (too thick / too thin)

Users can check the errors in the list and zoom into each error to eliminate oversights.

With this tool, engineers can detect manufacturing errors and make corrections during the design stage to minimize rework, reduce costs, and shorten lead time.

Detecting and Repairing PDQ Errors in Polygon Data

CADdoctor detects and repairs PDQ errors in polygon data, such as STL. It also optimizes the data by reducing the number of polygons while maintaining the geometry outline, equalizing the meshes, or integrating multiple volumes to a single volume (wrapping function).

Furthermore, it generates polygons from point cloud data obtained from 3D scanning.
